This is the first monographic publication on the
Belgian artist Jacqueline Mesmaeker (b. 1929). Her work is at once secretive –
it remained underground for a long time – and generous, taking a wide range of
different forms. This book unveils its variety as well as the constancy of its ethos: namely, to share a sense of
awe. It comprises a catalogue of about forty works, including illustrations and
notes, as well as a dozen essays on the importance of drawing in her artistic
practice, the influence of literature, the use of video and archives, the
function of the gaze and the dynamics of memory.
