The minister of culture of the Wallonia-Brussels
Federation picked (SIC)’s project to represent the French community of Belgium in
the Offsite section of the 55th Venice Art Biennale in 2013. The
project consisted in setting up a creative residency in Venice for about
fifteen Belgian artists from June 1 to September 30, 2013. The artists were
invited to come separately and spend about ten days there working on a new work
for inclusion in a collective book, which came out at the end of the residency.
The artists also posted photographs, videos, drawings, texts etc. on a
collective website. Unlike their individual projects for the book, the contributions
to the website were anonymous and, taken together, formed a sort of patchwork portrait
of the city of Venice and its imaginaire.
The present volume is the upshot of this project. The participating artists’ individual
notebooks are reproduced here in alternation with collective notebooks featuring
their anonymous contributions to the website. The book provides transitions
between various aesthetics and sites.
